Have you watched the hit drama Bridgerton (yet)? Well, let’s have a closer look at the story on the most fabulous and expensive menswear drama on Netflix.
A bit of background
Bridgerton is an American streaming television period drama series created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes. It is based on Julia Quinn’s novels set in the competitive world of Regency era London’s Ton during the season, when debutantes are presented at court.
What they wear
From a dapper Duke dressed in the finest silk… To Prince Friedrich’s double-breasted tuxedo coat worn when asking Daphne to the social ball of the season… There’s no shortage of style and sophistication, but how much would one of these looks set you back in real life?
We speak with Maximilian Ciampi, the Tailoring Director of 40 Savile Row, part of the Savile Row Company. He has over 20 years of experience working on the bespoke strip and has deconstructed the top five men’s looks from top to toe.
The Prince Friedrich
Prince Freidrich’s outfit is an accurate representation of what would have been worn by the royals of the Regency era. His double-breasted tuxedo coast, adorned with medals and show-stopping shoulder pads is a traditional royal uniform and similar to the one worn by Prince William on his wedding day. It’s likely these clothing items would be made of only the finest materials, right down to the silk gloves.
An outfit fit for a Prince would set you back an estimated £7,900.
When he was seen at one of the many social balls, he was often dressed more casually than the Lord’s and other people of status around him.
Perhaps on the first night when the Duke and Daphne first realised their love for one another, the Duke is seen in a velvet cutaway tailcoat, tailored trousers, a silk waistcoat encrusted with what looks like semi-precious stones as buttons and a silk scarf.
It’s estimated this look would set you back a cool £8,800.
Colin Bridgerton was embroiled in a major scandal but thankfully his fashion was less controversial. This look is multi-textured layering a crisp cotton shirt, printed silk waistcoat with gold buttons and a velvet tailcoat. He has opted for a more relaxed and simple black trouser.
It was very common for people of status and wealth to opt for bright colours as can be seen with these styles.
Always excited to discover a new brand and get to know how it all started.
The Story Behind Rumpl
On a surf and ski trip through California, their founders were sleeping in a van, several miles up a dirt road near a secret hot spring. They awoke the next morning in subzero temperatures with a car that wouldn’t start. Far outside of cell reception, and confronted with an impossibly long walk into town, they decided to bundle up in their sleeping bags and drink whiskey while they waited for someone else to show up.
Minutes turned to hours, and in that time the conversation took an unexpected turn to the subject of bedding. Cozy and warm in their sleeping bags, the two acknowledged how much better the materials felt and performed than what was on their beds back home. A resolve was made to create a “sleeping bag blanket” and the idea for thefirst Rumpl product was born.
Returning from the trip and borrowing a sewing machine, the first Rumpl “Puffy” blankets were hand sewn in a cramped San Francisco apartment. After several months using the blankets, the two realized they had stumbled on to an idea much grander than just a sleeping bag blanket. The materials typically found in everyday blankets hadn’t evolved in hundreds of years—the entire category wasn’t utilizing any of the material innovation that was taking place in apparel, outdoor gear, and activewear. The Rumpl brand was born!
Weatherproof, durable, and cozy blankets made with the same technical materials used in premium outdoor gear and activewear.
After turning to Kickstarter, getting funded in less than 24 hours, and ultimately hitting more than 10x the original campaign goal, they realized that others wanted more from an everyday blanket. Since that initial Kickstarter success, Rumpl has grown from a single home made ‘sleeping bag blanket’ to a whole line of blankets and technical comfort products that redefine the category.
3 Puffy Blankets To Choose From
Also, Rumple has just announced a distribution agreement with Unify Brand Partnerships, a distributor in the United Kingdom known for representing pivotal brands within the lifestyle, sport and outdoor categories.
Rumpl believes the blanket you use every day deserves the same attention to detail as a sleeping bag you might use ten times a year. In 2019, the brand completely redesigned their core line of blankets to only use 100% post-consumer recycled materials. They’re now recycling over 5 million discarded plastic bottles through their supply chain every year.
They’re also donating 1% of all revenue to environmental non-profits, as well as being members of the freshman cohort of brands that are certified as climate neutral.
In their own words: “One of our brand’s core values is to “Look To The Future Responsibly,” and consider that value in every business decision we make. In 2019, we completely redesigned our core line of blankets to use only 100% post-consumer recycled materials. We’re now recycling over 5 million discarded plastic bottles through our supply chain every year. We’re also proud to be a member of 1% For The Planet, which means we donate 1% of all revenue to environmental non-profits. And finally, we’re members of the freshman cohort of brands that are certified Climate Neutral. This means that beginning in 2020, and every year thereafter, we’ll be offsetting 100% of our company’s carbon footprint by purchasing offset credits.”
Is it too late to buy some sunglasses in September? Definitely not!
I was lucky to try out some of the Layoners sunglasses and I was not disappointed. They are really an amazing value for money as the prices are below £50. Also, they are very comfy to wear as their frame is really light.
Lightweight frames with flexible handles and polarised lenses
In their own words: ‘Straight from the runways of Milano to the streets of New York. Layoners brings the perfect mix of refined haute couture and hottest street style trends. Thick oversized frames, retro shapes and futuristic silhouettes have dominated this season, and we’re glad to feature them in our collections’.
I love a beach vacation, especially in the middle of the winter, and I couldn’t have asked for a better escape than going to Barbados.
In numbers, Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies. It is 34 kilometres (21 miles) in length and up to 23 km (14 miles) in width, covering an area of 432 km2 (167 squares miles). Its population is of almost 300,000 people.
My favorite spots.
Oistin Fish Market
During the daytime it might look quiet, however wait for a Friday night to eat some freshly caught fish cooked to perfection. Try some lobsters, shrimp, red snapper which are prepared on the grill and served with local favorites such as rice and peas, coleslaw, and salads.
My best evening in Barbados!
Pebbles Beach, the most popular spot according to TripAdvisor
Located in Carlisle Bay. This one seemed overrated to me. The minuses: looking to the left and you’ll see the not so pretty and massive Hilton hotel; look to the right and you’ll see the cruise ships transiting. At some point during the day the beach will be overcrowded by (cruise ship) tourists popping by for a few hours.
The pluses: the easy place to go snorkelling and watch the turtles. Magical!
Miami Beach, my (beach) hot spot!
This quickly became my preferred beach: beautiful sea & sand, good waves to both swim and bodysurf. Relaxed and not too busy (as the access isn’t obvious from the main street). Nice trees in the background – in case you’d need some shade. This beach has it all.
Here you’ll find a beautifully rugged coastline dotted with bays. The powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean pound the cliffs creating sea caves and blowholes. This is not an area for swimming but it makes up for this with majestic views and small pools for sea-bathing.
Both Barbados’ capital and largest city, it’s a vibrant, vivacious place steeped in history, where its unique blend of African, American and British heritage comes alive. Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with buildings dating back to the 17th, 18th, and 19th Century.
We have always liked Luke at StylePilot. We’ve been following the brand for many years now and it was with great pleasure to discover the new Luke Sport Performance range.
Luke Sport Performance takes a fresh new direction and delivers premium quality gym and sportswear with luxury appeal.
In their own words: “Luke Sport Performance is light-weight, breathable, easy to move and be seen in. Made with premium anti-wicking fabrics, the collection is the perfect look for the gym or main event”.
Charcoal, Delacreme and Marina Red combination striped vintage tape features throughout the collection. Easy to wear, comfortable pieces include quilted hoody’s, lightweight tees and crew neck sweatshirts and joggers giving multiple options for sets.
Metallic gunmetal logo tee’s with centralised embroidery features throughout the collection. This new logo brings a fresh, vibrant look to the classic Luke tee while maintaining the original spirit of the brand. Cut and sew combination fabrics feature on shirts, stretch poplin’s are trimmed with textured dobby in white, black and sky pinstripe and can easily be dressed up or down.
New technical fabrics in textured tricot are available in a variety of styles from full tracksuits to casual jumpers. Worn together or mix and match, these new styles are adaptable with components taken from all lifestyles.
Winters in London are characterised by cold and often rainy weather. The average high between December and February is 48°F (9°C) and the average low is 41°F (5°C). However, freezing temperatures are not uncommon and snow is not unheard of.
This year though, it’s another ‘rollercoaster’ winter that we have been getting. A hat, gloves and scarf should have become our best friends, however they haven’t.
Either way, very cold or just cold, this was another excuse to try on one one of the winter jackets from Superdry from this year’s collection. Pictured below, the Hacienda Wool Check Jacket (Yellow Check).
Looking for a jacket that covers both warmth and versatility? Look no further than our nostalgic, lumberjack inspired checked jacket. Perfect for Sunday strolls or Friday beers. This jacket features a zip and popper fastening, popper fastened cuffs, four pockets, and a fleece lining. The jacket is finished with a Superdry logo tab on the pocket and one on the sleeve.
What I liked about the jacket: It feels robust. It’s warm. And you feel good. And at last but not least: it’s a faux fur trim (feeling good about that too).
Any minuses: will I get tired of the yellow checks (?)
Black Friday is an informal name for the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The day after Thanksgiving has been regarded as the beginning of America’s Christmas shopping season since 1952, although the term “Black Friday” did not become widely used until more recent decades
Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial exhibition at Blenheim Palace – Victory is Not an Option just closed his doors; however, I was lucky to visit it!
The Italian art prankster redecorated Winston Churchill’s birthplace with an 18-carat loo, some gigantic union jacks, a taxidermy horse hanging from the ceiling, and Hitler on his knees.
18 works from Cattelan were displayed throughout the 18th century Palace.
The Great Court
A great walkaway, pictured above, of British Union Jacks flags leads up to the Palace, welcoming you on arrival.
Luckily, I couldn’t have been more blessed by the great weather conditions to enjoy the handsome gardens.
Maurizio Cattelan’s exhibition inside the Palace
Below a couple of selection of works from Cattelan. An exhibition which is not for the faint-hearted.
Clockwise: Taxidermy horse in the Red Drawing Room; Unusual self portrait in the Green Drawing Room; Adolf hitler in the Long Library.
The Palace is set in two thousand acres of parkland and formal gardens and as generation follows generation, successive Dukes have introduced their personal touch by each adding new styles and layers of beauty to the landscape.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Blenheim Palace attracts close to a million visitors a year from all over the world. The Palace was a gift from Queen Anne to the 1st Duke of Marlborough, following his decisive victory over the French at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704.
The Palace, which took almost thirty years to reach completion, was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh to function not only as a private house, but also a monument, castle, and citadel; a testament of England’s supremacy over the French in a blaze of architectural glory that would rival Versailles.
Steeped in British history, the Palace is also famous as the birthplace of the distinguished wartime Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, who was himself a member of the family and descendant of the 1st Duke. Handed down through successive generations, the Palace today continues to be privately owned and is the official seat of the current and 12th Duke of Marlborough.
